LAÍZ & THE LOVE EXPERIENCE "Se Segura"
release date: 13 June 2025
7" Single | Digital
Laiz’s love for music is rooted in tropicália, Brazilian music old and new, and soul. Think Tom Zé, Marcelo D2 and Sampha the Great. Like so many Brazilians, the deep reverence Laiz has for home grown funk, bossa and samba artists from the second half of the twentieth century runs deep.
This track, ‘Se Segura’, is an homage to warm and fuzzy-funk sound of 70’s Brazil and two of her favourite artists Jorge Ben Jor & Quarteto Em Cy.
The song is a play on the song ‘Salve o Verde’ by Quarteto Em Cy, that was originally composed by Jorge Ben addressing climate change and pollution in the cities. In the chorus they sang “god save the green, that the men is destroying, by constructing grey, save the green”. On Lais’ version, she uses the lyrics of the chorus but the ‘green’ instead relates to money.
Laiz surmises “Money is not the root of all evil, but it is accumulating in the hands of humans without morals who seek destruction for profit. Money, just like everything else, was colonised. And now the world is rapidly changing, empires are falling. The best we can do is to invest in our cultures, hold on to our communities. And take charge of the little that we have and make sure that art and music help us humans to survive this global rupture”
"The structures are falling so hold on to something"

About
“Strong, tender, and an outstanding new figure in globally-minded hip-hop” Pop Matters (USA)
"Brazilian rapper Laíz & The New Love Experience releases a remarkably self-assured debut, Ela Partíu (Agogo Records), combining tropicalia and samba with her languid flow to produce a lively modern Latin American take on hip-hop” The Guardian (GB)
“The 14 tracks give you room to breathe and lose yourself in music that seduces and hypnotizes” Sounds & Colours
Glowing with Pan-African collaborations, and rooted in Laiz’s love and appreciation of magical realism, tropicália and Brazilian music old and new. Ela Partiu features Sudanese trap-rapper Zeyo Mann, Ghanian percussionist and singer Eric Owusu (Jembaa Groove, Pat Thomas) and produced by young.vishnu & Pachakuti, from the up and coming crew, and Laiz’s label mates, The New Love Experience.
In Portuguese, Ela Partiu is the name of a classic Tim Maia track, the ‘70s tortured soul-boy from Brazil, one of Laiz’s heroes. It also translates to ‘she has gone’ referring to Laiz’s early-life decision to leave her family home, unable to adapt to a life as a Jehovah's Witness, from a city in the state of Sao Paulo.
Ela Partiu often veers from head nodding grooves switching to outright rude dancefloor mode and Sudanese rapper Zeyo Mann’s vocal delivery (in Arabic) on top of what the band call their ‘shake ass tune’ on Jongo is an exemplar, much in the vein of baile funk music.
“The origins of every Brazilian is very foggy. Culture can aide you on your path” Laiz
